Greetings fellow Opponauts,

I have a technical question, favor to ask. My brother is a budding film maker living in LA and often calls me with technical questions of all types.

His newest question is regarding some sort of automotive scene, he wants to make the speedo and odometer seem like the car is traveling very quickly while maintaining some level of safety. So how would I/he accomplish this? Could it be as simple as attaching say a drill motor to the speedo cable and spinning it up?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Raise the drive wheels off the ground, support on axle stands. Make sure to chock the wheels that remain on the ground. Start the car, put in gear and rev away!

*This works only for two wheel drive vehicles, AWD requires all wheels off the ground.

Track day?

Are we talking about strict and complete cutaway shots to a closeup, or shots with more than the speedo visible?

If its just a closeup, go to a junk yard and buy a dash cluster to screw with. The issue is that all cars are different in terms of how the speedo works, so your solution needs to be one that any car could conceivably pull off. Dash board close ups.

If its a shot where the speedo is visible with other things, you could see if its possible to intercut either highway shots for the speedo readings, or see if you can pull the glass forward and just reposition the needle to read much faster. The catch is that anything visible from the windows will look VERY out of place.

Good suggestions, he did not describe the exact details of the shot, if its possibly just the speedo then the solutions are there, if there is more of the car or a line of sight out of the windows then hes in trouble. Adding to the challenge is the shoot is in Alaska with an as of yet unnamed car. I like the manual needle placement, ill suggest that.

I definitely thought of this as well, I told him to be careful not to pull a ferris bueler.

If you want to do this with the car moving... Speedometer correctors can also help with this, without the need for track time or Bueller-esque drive-wheel lifting. If the car has an electronic speedo, its a bit easier, but there are mechanical correctors as well. You just need to get one which can increase the speed sensors signal to the gauge.

The answer is, quite obviously, A COMPETENT SPEEDOMETER SHOP. A good one can make all he needs to happen, IMHO. Call Gary AUBERLEN (YES, Bill’s dad!!!) who owns Paul’s Speedometer Service in Hermosa Beach, CA 310.375.8784 surely he’ll be able to help. Nice man too!
